Marietta Georgia Real Estate Marietta Georgia is the county seat of Cobb County. It was incorporated in 1834. There are lots of stories about how Marietta received its name. One story says that the Marietta was named after Judge Thomas Cobb. Another story say the city was named for two legendary ladies whose names were Mary and Etta. During the Civil War in 1864, Marietta was occupied by Union forces under the command of General William Sherman. Sherman decided to spare the city before going on to occupy and burn Atlanta later in the year. The 2005 census says that Marietta has a population of 61,261 and has an area of about 21.95 square miles. Marietta has experienced quite a lot of growth and development and Marietta Ga real estate has numerous communities that have swim and tennis facilities and the City Club of Marietta is an 18 hole public golf course. Marietta is home to 3 colleges: Life University, Southern Polytechnic State University and Chattahoochee Technical College.
